No coercive action on Delhi tobacco manufacturers, sellers

The Delhi High Court had requested the Delhi government not to take any coercive action against the tobacco manufacturers and sellers. There are number of pleas filed by the tobacco manufacturers regarding the sales of chewable tobacco in the national capital.

Justice Rajiv Shakdher granted protection to the tobacco manufacturers and sellers, on the basis of other similar orders passed earlier. All forms of the chewable tobacco including gutkha, khaini and zarda have been banned by the Delhi government in the national capital.

The government on March 25 issued a notification prohibiting manufacture, storage, distribution or sale of tobacco which is flavored, scented or mixed with any additive. The pleas urged the court to reject the notification, saying that only the central government and not the state government has the power to regulate sale or ban it.
